I am your tutor (Jessie Thom) who will be guiding you through this shorthand course. The training will cover twelve (12) weeks and include three levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. This course would be available for you to access at your convenience from anywhere and at any  tie providing you have internet access. 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Shorthand writing is a skill to enable writers to produce outlines which when transcribed produces the perfect English sentence.  The course is extremely beneficial to the professional worker or student seeking desirous of saving his or her time for other demanding tasks. Shorthand can be written at any time: while on your journey, in a business meeting and even while having fun with your family and friends. This course is tailored for three categories of learner: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. This course is designed to train secretaries, managers, students and other professionals in speed writing. The course will be delivered entirely by e-learning platform and will include assignments, quizzes and other activities to help students to grasp the concepts quickly to rapidly advance in their learning. Shorthand is a phonetic  language which which involves strokes, curves, dots and dashes, among other signs, to represent words in the English Language and helps writers to save their time for other more pressing administrative tasks. This course will appeal to a wide spectrum of workers: college and university students, journalists and other office staff, as it prepares them for life-long learning.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The aim of the course is to train students in speed writing.  This is possible as it is a phonetic language which uses strokes, curves and other symbols to represent the spoken word.  At the end of the training, students will be able to:

  1.    Understand the basic concepts of writing, reading and transcribing shorthand. 
  2.    Identify consonants, vowels, diphthongs, diphones, triphones and short forms of shorthand.
  3.    Read, write and transcribe shorthand correctly.
  4.    Position shorthand outlines correctly by the use of vowels, diphthongs, diphones and triphones, 
  5.    Develop shorthand writing speeds ranging from 60-100 words a minute.

STUDENTS LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this training, learners will be able to:

  1. Grasp all concepts pertinent to shorthand writing.
  2. Participate successfully in activities and assignments.
  3. Readwrite and transcribe shorthand.
  4. Memorize shorthand grammalogues (short forms).
  5. Understand the various circles, loops and hooks used in shorthand
  6. Successfully participate in quizzes and tests.
